Luke Inwood

Luke Inwood was a senior at Wachusett Regional high school and professional gamer from Rutland Massachusetts. He passed away yesterday at the age of 17. This post is very matter of fact, I would love to go on about all the good times Luke and I had growing up with the other kids in our neighborhood, but I don't want this to be about me. I would instead like to offer my sincere condolences to his friends and family. Also I would like to direct people to two great causes started by members of the gaming community who were close to Luke.

The first being this GoFundMe page set up by the co creator of the Relaspsed clan whom Luke had competed with in the past.

You can also pick up this T-shirt memorializing Luke. All proceeds go to Luke's family.

Luke you will be missed.

The Walking Dead is Racist? Season 5 Episode 9 Review

The Walking Dead season 5 episode 9 “What happened and What’s Going On” Review

So another week of The Walking Dead, and another character we must say goodbye to. Coming off the heels of the dramatic midseason finale in which we saw Beth die under extremely dumb circumstances, we see Tyreese die in similar fashion. While Tyreese didn't attempt to stab someone in a bulletproof vest, he did forget that he was living in a zombie apocalypse and had an extremely quiet zombie sneak up on him. I wouldn’t say that this episode was bad, in fact I thought it was one of the better episodes of the series, simply because of how different it was. Much like last season the second half seems to be allowing the writers to experiment with different ways of telling the story.
I enjoyed seeing the return of so many former cast members, and I did think it was interesting getting a look into the mind of a character who was dying from blood loss as well as the zombie virus. Apart from flashes into Shane’s mind after he was stabbed we haven’t seen what the process of turning is like. Granted the visions of the characters may have been specific to Tyreese. Overall I enjoyed the episode and I was very sad to see one of my favorite characters from the comics go. Now its official the character Tyreese is gone for good from the Walking Dead universe. I think this will offer us interesting potential story lines with Sasha who will have to cope with the loss of her brother just after she lost Bob.
Speaking of which has anyone else noticed that the Walking Dead kills off their black men at an absurd pace? Of the six or so African American men that have spent time with the group, all but two of them have been killed off. Also of note they very rarely have two African American men on the show at the same time for very long. Seriously look at this.

T Dog- Season 1-3 killed off, and replaced by Oscar.
Oscar Season 3 killed off rather quickly after Tyreese is introduced.

Bob Season 4-5 killed off fairly soon after Father Gabriel is introduced.

Tyreese Season 3-5 also killed off fairly soon after Gabriel, and Noah are introduced

Father Gabriel/Noah Season 5, watch your back.

.

You might say that a lot of people die on the Walking dead, but when you consider that 4/6 African American men have been killed off quickly you kind of get the feeling that the Walking Dead may be a bit racist.

Worcester State Basketball Profile, For my Sports writing class

WORCESTER- Home is where the heart is, as the old saying goes, and in sports home is where you expect to win. The home field advantage concept is second only to talent when considering which teams can win a championship. In fact often times a less talented team will beat a better team at home, because of this advantage. Said advantage however, is something Worcester State will be without as they look to improve on a 12-14 record from a year ago.
Worcester State will for the second straight year be without a home arena as they await the building of a new gym, slated to open in 2016. Until then Coach Dave Lindberg, who owns a 246-281 career record with Worcester State, will look to guide his team through this turbulent time.
“I tell them in the first meeting in September,” Said Lindberg “That this is the last time I want to talk about not having a gym, we’re not going to use it as an excuse and we’re going to move forward.”
The team certainly took that message to heart at the end of last season, after beginning the season 1-8 Worcester State won 11 of its last 17 overall, and 8 of its last 9 conference games.
“I expect us to be at least as good as we were for the second half of last year,” Said Lindberg.
Recruiting has been a tricky business, due to the handicap of not having a gym. Lindberg knew he wasn’t going to be able to attract a lot of kids for this year. His solution was to recruit heavy for last year’s class resulting in a team driven by their sophomore talent.
This class is led by Center Paul Brooks, at 6’9 he is the tallest player in the conference, and a real difference maker for a team in need of positives.
“Paul changed the game on defense, teams adjust what kind of shots they are going to take when he’s on the court, he was three blocks away from the team record for blocks in a season,” an excited Lindberg said.
While not having a gym will hurt them in recruiting and the short term, Lindberg explained that building a new gym was necessary, as Worcester State was one of the only teams in the conference that hadn’t done major work to improve its facilities since 2000.
The biggest challenge is finding a place for the team to practice, often times they will use middle school, elementary school, or another college’s facilities. This works until the teams that belong to the school begin practicing which is after thanksgiving for the non-collegiate teams. From then on it will be only at night or early in the morning.
“We’re going to go early in the morning or anywhere from 9 (pm) to 9:30. We had many practices last year that we started at 9 and ended at 11:30,” Said Lindberg “99.9 percent of the time everyone shows up on time, I set three alarms today because it’s such an odd time (4:30 am) I think they are doing great I think their attitudes have been great.”
As far as games go, Worcester State will be looking to other colleges around the Worcester area to play at for home games. These include home games at Assumption, Nichols, WPI, and Quinsigamond Community College.
Starting Power Forward Charles Gunter, a senior, has already dealt with not having a gym while in high school.
“In High school I didn’t have a home court, I went to New Mission State, so this is nothing new for me, it sucks to have it and now not have it, but I didn’t have one then either,” Said Gunter.
In fact he offers a silver lining to the ordeal.
“Having a gym and losing it is pretty hard, it’s kind of frustrating when we have to go from gym to gym each practice, it’s either early in the morning or later in the afternoon, but overall I personally think it builds character, because as the season goes on and you get later in the season most of your games are going to be on the road and that’s when you really have to stick together,” Said Gunter.
Sophomore Forward Jeremy Bacon echoes that sentiment.
“If anything I’d say it brings us more together because we have to adapt to something that a lot of colleges don’t, but it is a pain,” Said Bacon.
Looking toward the 2014-15 season Worcester State is in a good position to improve on last year’s mark. What they lack in stadium stability they make up for in chemistry as they are returning four of five starters from last year. The four starters are Brendan Rios a senior guard, Manny Cabral a Junior Guard, Charles Gunter a Senior Forward, and Paul Brooks a sophomore center.
The perseverance and optimism expressed in the preseason has rarely carried over to the court in the young season. The Lancers won their season opener against Becker, but have dropped their next three games.
Brandan Rios has been a major contributor so far averaging 13.3 points, while Paul Brooks leads the way in rebounding with 8.8 boards a game, and Manny Cabral averages 2.0 assists per game.
Two of their three losses have been close calls, including a 60-61 loss at Wesleyan University, and a 62-65 loss at home (Assumption).
The good news for the Lancers is they have yet to play a conference game. Also they have overcome slow starts in the past (See last year) and have put themselves in positions to win games late so far this season.

As long as they can come together as a team they have a good chance at competing for the MASCAC championship. If they do find themselves in the position to host a MASCAC playoff game, well things will certainly get interesting for the nomadic Lancers, who are looking for a place to call home.

The Man After Dan

The NFL is a quarterback driven league, and for much of the 21st century the Miami Dolphins haven’t had a good one. From 1983-1999 Dan Marino started 240 of 269 games for the Dolphins. Since that time, 240 games, 21 different quarterbacks have started a game for the Dolphins.
The once proud franchise, owners of the only undefeated season in the Super Bowl era have languished between mediocrity and downright futility since Marino’s retirement.
Marino’s career record over those 240 starts 147-93, a winning percentage of 61 percent. The 21 quarterbacks who have come after him have gone 107-133, a winning percentage of 44 percent.
Marino brought the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs 10 times in his 17 year career. In the 14 completed season since his retirement the Dolphins have made the playoffs a resounding three times.
So who can save the Dolphins and their terrible track record post Marino? Well the answer is of course Marino.
Allow me to explain. In the 2012 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins held the 8th overall pick, they were not going to be able to trade up to draft Andrew Luck, or Robert Griffin III so they decided to draft Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M.
Most people saw this as an extreme reach, and Tannehill as a project at best. Someone who had all the pieces to the puzzle, but would need good coaching to fit them together. He won the starting job out of camp and became the first rookie to start at quarterback for the Dolphins. He played decently but didn’t blow the doors off of the NFL, in his 32 starts he went 25 and 17, passed for 7,207 yards with 36 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
These number aren’t too bad when it comes to rookie stats, but his mediocrity was compounded by the fact that his fellow quarterbacks drafted in 2012 had made the playoffs a combined 5 times, and won a Super Bowl.
The beginning of the 2014 season wasn’t great for Tannehill, after three games the Dolphins were 1-2 and head coach Joe Philbin was noncommittal when it came to whether Tannehill would continue to start for the Dolphins.
Enter Dan Marino, the Dolphins have quietly brought Marino in to mentor Tannehill at how to play quarterback in the NFL.
“It’s cool,” Tannehill said. “I appreciate the knowledge he has of the game, just little insights that he can point out and just him being around showing that he cares, it’s nice. He’s always just pointing out little things on tape, whether it’s a receiver’s routes or something I’m doing. He’s good at picking up little things and passing them along.” (profootballtalk.com)

Since Marino has come in the Dolphins have gone 5-2, and Tannehill has thrown for 1730 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. They are two late drives away from being 7-0 as they lost at the end to both the Packers and Lions after leading 24-20 and 16-13 respectively.
Tannehill has looked more than solid during this time, and you need look no further than Marino. He has helped out tremendously as Tannehill is playing the best football of his professional life, and has put the Dolphins in a position to not only make the playoffs, but also win the division. They are currently two games behind the Patriots who are 8-2, with one game against the Patriots remaining, and six games to play overall.
Tannehill just won perhaps the biggest game of his career so far on Thursday night. A divisional matchup against the Buffalo Bills, a team he had lost three straight against coming in, including a 29-10 lost earlier this year. The game served as a pseudo playoff game for the two teams, as both sat at 5-4. The Dolphins won in convincing fashion 22-9, as Tannehill went 26/34 for 240 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It’s hard to say whether Tannehill will become the franchise quarterback the Dolphins have been looking for. According to Ian Rapoport the Dolphins are “cautiously optimistic” that he can become that guy. The real test will be this Sunday as the Dolphins take on the Broncos in Denver.
As for right now, Tannehill may not be Marino, but with Marino’s help he has a chance to become the man after Dan.

Streaming Week 1

I've been playing around with the idea to stream for a while now. I miss making videos, the planning the editing, and the sense of accomplishment when you upload a new video to youtube is like no other. So I figured that streaming and uploading the clips to youtube would be almost sort of like making videos. I made an account TheLastOfTheGoodOnes on twitch.tv, and started by playing some Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. That was fun, although I didn't have a mic on, so no one could hear me. Later that day Jenny and I played COD: AW again and our friend's actually came out and watched the stream, it was a really neat experience and keeping up with the chat room was entertaining. Last night we tried to stream The Master Chief Collection, but matchmaking issues, along with just generally not being good at the game caused us to switch back to COD: AW. So what have I learned in the few days I've been streaming? Well that you have to be patient, you're not going to get a ton of people watching your stream right away (Also I'm glad for that because I can't imagine we're that interesting currently. I've talked to a few people about streaming other games and we'll see how it goes. As for my first week, I suppose it's sort of been a success.

Thoughts on The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5 "Self Harm"

The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5

I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of these standalone episodes, with season 4 episode 14 “The Grove” being the exception. The Walking Dead is billed as an ensemble drama, but for some reason the show insists on taking these detours which feature only a few characters. This season started out really strong with three episodes featuring a large cast and multiple stories going on with the action moving quickly. However we've moved away from that in the past two episodes (And the next one based on the preview) and this is what we’re stuck with. With all that being said, I really did enjoy the last night’s episode “Self Harm” I think if they embrace the “LOST” style of flashing back to a previous time for one character to give us more backstory, and character development these standalones (This isn't a word, but I don't really care) will become more palatable.
But let’s talk about the important part of the episode, the boning!

Oh, not the boning?

Oh right… Eugene has a secret.

He’s not a scientist, instead he’s just a guy who is pretty smart, and reasoned that his best chance for survival is to pretend that he holds the cure to the zombie apocalypse, thus convincing strong people to escort him to Washington. Why Washington? Well he thinks that if any place in the country would be equipped to withstand an apocalyptic event it would be the nation’s capital. Not terrible logic I suppose, it will be interesting to see if the group still heads towards Washington, or if they stay in the Atlanta area. This is a game changer and we’ll have to wait and see where the show goes from here. It was a great moment, but I’m a little concerned that it will take the wind out of the sails of the season. Before Eugene dropped his bombshell we had a clear trajectory of the season, they were going to Washington, the nightmare was coming to an end, and things were going to change. Now that this secret is out its unclear where the characters are going to go, and what they are going to do.
I have a confession, much like Eugene I’ve not be completely forth right with my friends. What I mean by that is when I’ve talked about the show with my friends and family I’ve had to try and dance around the discussion of Eugene’s cure. I’m an avid fan of the comic books, so I knew that there was a strong chance that Eugene was lying (granted the show strays from the source material quite a bit so I really couldn’t be sure) I do apologize to everyone for that, hope we can still be friends… please don’t punch me in the face!
